I liked all of these dudes who were ridiculously competent while everyone else was being fucking ridiculous! Johan probably doesn’t fall into that category but, boy character with blue hair voiced by a woman is like instant arrow to the heel for me. I love how instantly he connected with Judai, I think that was really positive for Judai as a person and as a character, if I can be permitted to speak about him from both an in-universe and a watching a TV show perspective. Hahaha. I love his ruffles, I love all his damn rainbows. He’s sweet and tries real hard, I like him very much. I like him and Judai as a thing A Lot. Judai gets like an honorary fave spot when attached to Johan (and Yubel, that’s in there too).
The number of times that everyone else was standing around like I don’t know what are we going to do now and O'Brien was just like “we’re going to do this, except by we I mean me, and by going to I mean it’s already done, let’s go” are just like 💚. Sir, thank you for being the only person with a functional brain on screen at any given point in time. Other people like I don’t know how we’re going to handle this this man is being dangled over a death trap and O'Brien is just like maybe we can stop playing card games and fix the problem. O'Brien single-handedly saved anime this is a real fact. I think you are in the middle of watching him get really cool character development! He is criminally underrated. I think we all know why… I love him I think he’s great - he is so fun to draw and just Real Good.
Jim just like, hey I’ve got a conspicuous eyepatch and also a crocodile. I’ve named her Karen. He says things in the most outrageous English I’ve ever heard and it is like absolutely unreproducible by anybody else. Like many of the characters in the show I absolutely do not believe that he is the age that they say he is but he’s so good.
Kenzan is just like such a genuine dude??? His backstory is so fucking ridiculous? Most of him is ridiculous? But in a way that kind of makes him endearing? He’s so often ends up in situations where he is the guy doing the competent normal reaction stuff and it’s like how is the dude with a fossilized Triceratops bone in his leg like the person with the most normal reaction? Also good to draw, love his hair also. I loved the way they translated his weird dinosaur speech pattern in the subtitles. He just looks like he should be a much more serious dude than he is but he’s kind of chill and fun. What a nice guy.
MANJOUME, what a fucking dumpster fire of a person I love him. I did not like him at all until they decided to send him to the Arctic. Then they drag them through the trash and rode him around in the dirt and he came back as like just the right kind of bitchy drama queen for me. One of the duels that I was not bored to Tears by in the show was him using an entire Deck full of garbage stuff with zero attack points I thought that figuring out a good way to use that was so much more interesting than the usual Yu-Gi-Oh approach of I just summon a bigger stronger thing than you did. I love him literally embracing being garbage. I love that there’s like a weird insecurity thing going on underneath all of that. I love that he adopted all the garbage monsters. I love that he’s just a wreck of a human being, wow, so good. Love that all it took for me to love this guy was for someone to kick him off the pedestal and like stomp him into the dirt for a minute. Manjoume Thunder is what is UP.
I love this terrible little dude, I have a really spectacular sleep disorder, and I discovered in the last 5 years or so that I do in fact sleep better with a sleep mask. It also reduces anxiety for some kind of reason.
So it’s like this is such a stupid item, it’s not going to be the kind of thing that people were clamoring for and thus I will be able to obtain on a casual eBay sale when someone is downsizing their collection or whatever. It’s not like it has wide appeal like a figure or a wall scroll or something.

I feel like talking, I guess? So I’m gonna chatty here for a bit.
I watched another fucking yugioh in the last two weeks, you may have noticed. Like my other favorite, as far as you know, it may also only include 2 characters hahaha
It was never my intention to watch any spinoff media, so that I’m here a year after my initial manga binge like, “Yeah, I’ve read the original manga, and watched 4 additional spinoff anime series” is … certainly something. ( For people keeping track at home for some reason, content I have consumed: DM manga, GX, ZeXal, Arc-V, VRAINS. Someday I may get over how much I hated the motorcycle based section of Arc V and then watch 5Ds, but right now I don’t plan on it. Actively uninterested in the ones that have been coming out lately from the new animation studio, so I feel like it should be a stable level of consumption for now???? But it’s likely that somebody could hand me the manga versions of any of the above and I would sit through that also so who the fuck knows.)
I got merchandise, even, so like, I cared about some stuff enough to make more than one purchase. There’s even parts in place for a few other dolls and adjacent nonsense, so it’s like, oh, wild, I gave a surprising number of shits about this. I have four keychains. A damn throw pillow. Jewelry.
I still don’t care about card games. I actively skip a lot of duels between like, minor characters or one-offs haha. In the end, I think the diversity of different games and the horror elements of the original manga is still what I like best about it but, overall themes of “very good guy is violently possessed by Darkness” is AnAppeal, for fucking sure. Additional themes of ‘guy eternally tangled up with inhuman partner’ is a vibe I enjoy as well. Protagonist being themed with darkness and the Rival character being light is an inversion that I enjoy no matter how many times they do it. Sometimes there’s like a confusing level of theming going on but I’m still on board?
Anyway, I had a surprisingly good time overall. I had like a different experience for every one of these. Two of them I live blogged on a large Discord server one of them I did on my own and one of them I watched almost nightly with a bunch of friends and we all screamed at the violently ricocheting animation quality and baffling plot points. But even the series I liked the least was still enjoyable and still had fucked up little dudes in it that I loved so it all works out. ( there’s really dumb specific merchandise of one of those little dudes that I want so bad and I will never be able to find it haha)
Maybe it was all just a coping mechanism or something and I would have enjoyed it less if I were in a more stable and less pandemic, inflation, and disability infused world but it is nice to enjoy a bunch of little colorful guys and try to draw their stupid hair
