lostthehat asked: with my limited knowledge of Babylon 5 I always thought the hair thing was just a style a few characters enjoyed so I'm kind of :D to find out it's a species thing. I'm kind of picturing designers sitting in a room wondering how to this alien species will look until a person stands up and goes to a chalk board and says "what if we draw their hair like this" and the rest of the room breaks out in wild applause. Does their hair grow like that or is it a style? I'm way curious about this now.

First:  OMG WATCH THE THING, THE THING IS SO GOOD, WATCH THE THING FEEL MY PAIN FEEL MY JOY

Second: It’s so great to me? I want to try to tell like four stories at once and they are gumming up the works, but okay, like,

I love the idea that a species that presents with generally the same outward shape as humans (when clothed, anyway), decided on a different idea of what the ideal of that form is.  And they decided on bald ladies (with variation) and Fan Hair.

The best thing, though, is that it is definitely a style.  You begin to see differing hair fan sizes throughout the show’s run and later, Londo makes explicit mention of it to the current Emperor, stating he’s surprised by how short the Emperor’s hair is, and that it’s not a usual look for someone of his status.   The Emperor is fucking bonkers, but he says he’s looking to start a trend, and then we pan around the room and it’s all these nobles with much smaller hair than we’re using to seeing on Centauri and suddenly Londo kind of sticks out a bit, it’s great.   So the hair size is related to your age and your status as well as your values, it’s kind of Fab.

Meanwhile, the hair was a joke.  Peter Jurasik (the actor who played Londo) tells a story about getting into makeup the first time and the makeup people have this picture of how Londo should look with a much smaller crest of hair on his head to guide them.   In order to start the look, though, they make this massive fan out of long wig, with the anticipation that they’ll cut it down.   Annnd then it was hilarious, so they showed it to the show’s creator, who was like ,‘Yeah, that’s great, go with that,’ and everyone involved was super dismayed.

BUT NOW WE HAVE THIS FABULOUS HAIR THING.

Honestly, one of the things I wish we’d seen at some point was Londo’s hair not aggressively styled.  Like, someone show me what this dude’s hair looks like first thing in the morning or after a shower.  Though, honestly, if I had to choose between seeing all the wet hair, or that we actually got to see tentacles, I think I weirdly prefer the tentacles, haha.

BUT STILL, WHAT DO CENTAURI LOOK LIKE DOUSED WITH BUCKETS OF WATER. THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS WE MUST ASK OURSELVES.

thegreatersphinx-deactivated201 asked: I have always found it easier to leave oneself unlabeled than to try to contort oneself to fit into the narrowly defined parameters of other people's boxes or to make one's own narrowly defined box around oneself. Be free. Also, you do good art.

This is kind of why I don’t have any of that information in my side bar like a nutrition label, and why I didn’t put my giant post in any of the relevant tags.  Too many people yelling about ‘doing it wrong’ and that I have been uncomfortable with nearly every word ever used to describe me.  It’s why I’m so often saying 'someone on the asexual spectrum’ rather than 'asexual’, though the latter is an easier shorthand.  I saw that there were words at some point that got close to how I rolled, so that felt close-enough-ish for me to know that there were other people like me and I could use the words to guide someone who mattered latter.  Now I don’t really have a word for what I do, just a lot of 'These are sort of it, I’m in this spectrum somewhere, I guess, whatevs.“  Some people want nothing, some people want an itemized list.  Whatever works.

And thank you!

commandoclowns-deactivated20160 asked: Your Word Spew Was Very Helpful. And That Autochor-whatever Is Like Perfect For How I Usually Feel. It's Nice To Know There Are Words For How You Feel So You're Not Always Like 'What The Fuck Is Wrong With Me'. Thank You For Taking The Time To Spew Words For Me.

See, you give up on that word right after seeing it too, haha.

And you’re welcome, I’m really glad it helped!   I am nothing if not painfully verbose, so word spew is utterly no problem!

Incidentally, if you sent me a message or fanmail about all this, I thank you now and tell you I will get to it soon!  I’m trying to space it out so as to not totally flood people’s dashboards with all the asks I got talking about how great my work is, haha.  I figured that would get a little tiring!

Lady’s Blog:  Where one comment about a fruit hat spawns a comic and merchandise, and one picture of sleeping aliens results in a massive week-long conversation about marginalized sexual identities.

Come for the Bright Colors, stay for paragraphs upon paragraphs of people yelling what amounts to “SAME”.    (I fucking love you all.)

I should post some international disney songs again just to see what happens.

I do the same thing, I just generically tell people I’m bisexual, but I’m more specifically demi-sexual. It’s just too much to explain sometimes. I’ll explain it to my other queer friends though

Yes, definitely.  And demi-sexual was a label I was happy to find, hold and use to some degree, though I still feel like I’m a slightly modified version of that, but, yes yes.  (Because despite never actively wanting it, experiencing terror at the idea of myself as a sexual object, and being mostly repulsed by sexual imagery, I’ve retained this feeling that if I DID do this with someone, it is EXTREMELY A BIG DEAL SUPER SPECIAL MASSIVE INDICATION OF MY FEELING FOR THEM.  So all the sites saying, “Yeah, asexuals don’t care about it at all, nor to do they assign specific value to it” sort of trip me up.  And the ones that say, ‘Yeah, just let your sexual partner get their sexual needs fulfilled with another person’ send me into horrible anxiety spirals.  And this is why I will be alone forever, haha.)

BUT YES,  after you go down so many levels of complication, it turns out that 'bisexual’ is the most complicated thing the average person understands, and it’s not worth explaining to people who aren’t very close to you.

Or… people on Tumblr, I guess.
