i want to just stay here and recover and zone out to 90s tv and paint into a nice long weekend, but half the clerical staff already has the day off :C

umadashibayashi replied to your post:yay, it’s an episode with vir and londo and…
The show was supposed to have ended after the 4th season, then got magically re-upped for a 5th season. That’s why the end to the 4th season is rushed and the 5th season is kinda “extra.”
Right, right, so I’ve been informed. It definitely has that feeling. I thought Season 4 had a very Ending feeling, and was really lovely, and then Season 5 was like someone told the writing staff to keep going after they’d concluded their novel and so they actually had to deal with the end game changes they’d made.
On one hand, I am So Glad, because I felt like there was so much more G'Kar and Londo to be had - and I don’t think that’s my hideous bias toward them, even - and on the other I feel like some people had to be sort of yanked from a comfortable ending and thrown through the ringer a bit because their continuing existences had been planned to be just chill shit? It’s rough to watch in places, it’s like I can feel the story straining a little unless it’s the stuff with the Centauri homeworld and Londo’s continuing adventures of aristocratic trauma or G'Kar’s book and his ~amazing complex shit~ involving Londo and Centauri people in general.
Like, fuck, as much as I am happy when he is just strolling around that palace pretty much throwing glittery shade on everyone and steering Londo around, I also love that there are still some serious wounds under there. The stuff with Na'Toth! Like, damn, there were some teeth there, and that was glorious. And Londo is kind of trying to not just sit and let shit happen like he did before? He’s doing this weird kind of personal struggle versus aristocratic bullshit dance, it’s fantastic. He can’t tell the people in the palace to fuck off, but he can tell them G'Kar has a name.
I did not expect to miss Marcus, but that’s a thing that’s going on that is super weird. I think maybe I don’t miss a lot of these characters on their own, just their interactions? Like poor Ivanova didn’t get a lot of chances to do shit on her own, but I definitely miss her and feel like the captain is an awkward substitute who takes her lines from time to time. I feel like I would miss the Doctor being Steven, even if I don’t think they have ever done anything compelling with him and kudos to the actor for bothering to come back all the time, damn.
I don’t know, man, I just feel like Londo and G'Kar were some of the only people who legitimately had more story to tell, so their bits of season 5 are all that has been super genuinely engaging to me. I think there’s some good still left in Vir and Lennier, story-wise, and I’m happy I see them.
All the women seem to have just run into walls. Lyta seemed to be struck mute and mentally blank while she was with Byron and the others, and even though I thought she was bland before, she hit new heights of blah for that whole thing. Annnd now there’s this weird shit she’s talking to G'Kar about and it sounds like a giant pile of Do Not Want and also they just can’t let her exist without orbiting SOME dude? Holy balls. And the captain HAD to have a prior relationship with the president?? Where have Delenn’s claws gone?? She’s mostly just smiling in the background and handing out folders. I saw her break a dude’s finger an episode or two ago and was really excited, but then she just went around being distressed and quiet after that.
Instead we see Bester all the time, because I guess he’s available and he’s one of the few original cast members left, but oh my god, the writers were so much more enchanted with PsiCorps than I will ever be, though I can concede that I guess they have some left over story potential in them like Londo and G'Kar, it’s just not interesting story.
This feels like an Ezri situation - trying to cram a whole character and relationships and development worthy of audience investment into one season. At least Ezri had the benefit of being Trill and the only thing that had changed! (also i loved her~) It feels like more things on this season have fallen apart. Like they had a nice tapestry woven before, but now they’ve taken out too many threads and the ones they’ve replaced them with just aren’t as strong. Not through any fault of their own, they just don’t have the benefit of being woven deeply into the rest of the work.
I may have over-extended that metaphor. But I stand by it, whatever.
So yeah, I definitely am not enjoying this season as much aside from Londo and G'Kar who are sending into fits of joy enough to send me into orbit, but wow am I glad we are done with Byron, mighty fuck.
holy words, batman
