Forty eight years ago this week Star Trek debuted its first episode on NBC. The show, like all other shows at the time, was broadcast in the old style 4x3 aspect ratio. Using HD screen caps from my friends atTrekcore.com, I created this project of what the show would have looked like in Cinerama widescreen. As a kid the show always felt bigger and more epic than it appears to me as an adult. I was able to create these shots by waiting for the camera to pan and then I stitched the separate shots together. The result is pretty epic. It reminds me of the classic science fiction movies of the 50’s and 60’s. Suddenly the show has a “Forbidden Planet” vibe. Other shots remind me of how director Robert Wise would use a camera technique to keep the foreground and background elements in focus.

omg johnny is such a hideous little grouch through the whole driving sequence and yet he and tenna are still so adorable playing off each other…

:D :D :D

Thank you~~~

I love this about him?  He can sit and be a whiny pain in the ass and yet somehow, there is still something charming and adorable about him.  He has mastered some kind of secret ‘love me or else’ sorcery.  It’s his 'people skills’, clearly.

I had so much fun with Tenna, I adore her.  I can’t believe she spent so much time being background in the original, because she’s a fucking joy this time around.  She’s actually really good for taking the sting out of Johnny’s comments, so she seems like she’d be critical for times when he’s angry at everyone.

I love grouchy Johnny as much as I love unkillable enthusiasm Tenna.  It’s a curse, and I adore it.

Odo is such an important Star Trek character because more than any other character I’ve seen, he illustrates what it’s like to grow up different from everyone else and how that difference shapes you. This scene fucking guts me when I watch it. I order to fit in, he was forced to participate in the othering of himself. His uniqueness is fine as long as it only comes out in ways that are palatable for society. The rest of the time, he was to look and act like everyone else, regardless of how unnatural it feels for him. And it just leaves him feeling bitter and alone.
