You guys have to understand that I posted this meme right before I was leaving to go to a job interview two days ago, and when I got to the place I was interviewing with, I went to turn my phone off, and the only messages I had were people asking for The Brig in pastels, Dukat in pastels, and my original character Banshee, who is usually covered in blood, in pastels.

Clearly there’s an agenda.

What to say when an artist quotes your commission higher than you expected:

fauxboy:

  • “Thank you for the quote, I’ll keep it in mind and get back to you sometime when I’m able to commission you!”
  • “That’s a little out of my budget for the time being, but thank you for your time. I’ll contact you again if/when I am able to pay!”
  • “I appreciate the quote, but i’ve decided to wait on the commission, thank you!”
  • “I understand your prices and that they are fair, but I am unable to afford this for the time being! Good luck on the rest of your commissions.”

What NOT to say when an artist quotes your commission higher than you expected:

  • “WAHHHHHHHHHHH”
  • ”@-@ Holy crap that’s expensive!!”
  • “Could you maybe give me a tumblr follower discount? :3”
  • “Your prices are too high!!!!”
  • “Really?? Just for a sketch? I could draw it for half that!!”

Treat artists like human beings. We gotta eat too. Commissioning an artist is not different from any other contract work. You’re not going to ask your dentist for a discounted root canal or tell your contractor his cabinets are too expensive, don’t ask artists to change their prices because you perceive them as too high. More than likely, an artist taking commissions from the internet are drastically under charging themselves already. Please be respectful and understanding that art is a skill and not a favour.

The opening notes of ‘One Day More’ (which I heard despite my door closed and 70’s Eurovision playing) summoned me from across the house like some kind of painfully nerdy call of the wild and I found my mother and step-dad watching the Tony’s.  I don’t know who that Enjorlas was, but he was KILLING IT.  I wanted an appropriate sort of “GET IT, GIRL” thing to yell at the screen, because A+

JM: So what happened after Star Trek? You left LA not long after, right? ——————
AS: Los Angeles felt like the wrong place to be, so I took my family and we went up to New York. The town seemed dark and dismal and boring. Lonely. But it wasn’t, that was just my life. And I couldn’t find any work. I did a couple of films right away. Vertical Limit and Reign of Fire. In Vertical Limit I had six lines. I spent six months in New Zealand to deliver those lines. I was playing a kind of Afghani or Pakistani Sherpa dude, a mountain guide. It was fun. It kept me going financially. No one was sending me scripts. No one wanted to know, really. I was flailing. My marriage was falling to pieces. In my imagination, we were in New York for a ridiculously large amount of time. It was a year. And then they blew up the World Trade Center.

JM: You were there?
AS: My wife and son were. I had gone back to England on September 10. I was going to direct a film. The very next day, they blew the building up. And that was the beginning of a new chapter of my life, the beginning of becoming Arab, becoming politicized. I think that happened to the whole swath of people who have Arabic or Islam in their culture. Everybody had to change their tune on that day.

Sorry, I’d like to stick with things I’m at least familiar with for this exercise!  Thanks for asking, though!

I’m publishing this just to answer anyone else who might have been wondering! Suggestions/requests don’t have to be ds9, but it should be something I know! Feel free to ask if you’re not sure. I have a few Trek ones that are a little borderline and I’m not sure if I’m doing because I honestly don’t know who the characters are to read their names, haha.  This thing is all about practicing colors and brushes and approaches for me, so I don’t want to stress horribly researching and finding reference for something I’m not familiar with.

Apologies and thanks for understanding!

Got A Girl Crush Obsession On: The Forgotten Lumberjills of WWII

Like the many other amazing heroines of their time, the ladies of the Women’s Timber Corps, aka the Lumberjills, stepped into unconventional britches in order to keep the industry, and country, moving while the men were off at war. Of course, there were also some major stereotypes which had to chopped down along the way:

They faced prejudice from the male forestry workers, as this was pure manual labor and they weren’t expected to be tough enough. Needless to say, they proved them wrong. Their hands became calloused, they developed strong muscular arms and legs - not traits of a “real lady“ at the time, but they relished the freedom and fresh air even if it did cause many aches and pains! I can imagine that many were unwilling or uncomfortable to return to indoor-domestic lives IF their husbands returned. For those who joined when young, or if widowed and having to start afresh, I believe it gave them a strong core confidence, and the toughness to go on alone.

Seriously, though. When someone inevitably makes a movie out of this, will someone please get a hold of me? I’ll need to raid the wardrobe.
