i know i just made a post about this but i figured i’d make one with more information!

is there anyone in the san antonio/austin area (TX) who would be willing/able to take this kitty? she showed up on my back porch a few weeks ago and i’ve been feeding and taking care of her since then, but i’m moving to austin and i’m not going to be able to take her with me. the other cats that hang around the apartment complex are very aggressive and violent and i’m terrified they’re going to attack her if i’m not there.

she’s a female tortoiseshell kitten that’s about 5-6 months old and weighs around 4-5 pounds. i doubt she’s been spayed or has gotten shots but she’s a healthy weight and very energetic and appears to be in overall good health otherwise.

she’s VERY friendly, affectionate, and playful. she loves large crowds of people and lets you pick her up and cuddle her and carry her around. she’s almost constantly purring and chirping at you. she’s basically the perfect kitten — i just can’t take her with me!

right now she’s at my san antonio apartment and i’m in austin, but i would be willing to drive and get her and bring her to either austin or san antonio if anyone could take her! i’d also be willing to cover the basic preliminary care costs (spaying, shots) which most shelters estimate is about $40. I WILL LITERALLY PAY YOU TO TAKE THIS KITTEN.

i would just be heartbroken to have to leave her there. most shelters here aren’t adopting cats or make you wait through an applications process and i don’t have time for that with my current moving/work schedule.

please let me know if you can adopt her!!! by 5/26 would be ideal! message me here

Help this cute kitty!

Learnt an interesting thing today on this arabic course,

The original Arabic number system looked like this, the one we now use.

It was designed so each character had the corresponding number of angles to the number, so the number 1 has 1 angle, 2 has 2 angles, 3 has 3, 0 has none etc…

It is so obvious now, I’ve always assumed its one of those things that just is, with no logical explanation, but here it is, perfectly simple and satisfying

My jaw is legit on the floor right about now :D

OH MY LORD!!!!! I AM IN MATH NERD HEAVEN!!

Eeeeehhhhhh……..

The “fact rage” and the “be nice” parts of me are embroiled in a bitter battle right now, so I’ll put this as nicely as I can.  This is 99% likely not true.  Go here or read almost any link from these search results.

Long story short: the Arabic numerals came from the Hindu numerals which evolved from the Brahmi numerals, which came in part either from Roman or Chinese or arose independently as a stroke based counting system.  1, 2, and 3 are written as vertical or horizontal strokes in the earliest Brahmi system, becoming codified as horizontal strokes later on. 1 switched back to vertical at some point, while the shapes that would become 2 and 3 arose from a kind of “cursive” joining of the two/three strokes.  4 was originally a + or X, possibly reminiscent of four lines or the four directions.  The rest were probably just arbitrary symbols chosen for convenience.

This angles myth has been around for a loooooong time, put forward by someone who evidently couldn’t abide the notion that our numerals arose, like pretty much everything else to do with language, completely arbitrarily and by chance.

By copyrighting his property as an artwork, he has prevented oil companies from drilling on it.

Peter Von Tiesenhausen has developed artworks all over his property in northern Alberta.  There’s a boat woven from sticks that is gradually being reclaimed by the land; there is a fence that he adds to each year of his life, and there are many “watching” trees, with eyes scored into their bark.

Oil interests pester him continually about drilling on his land.  His repeated rebuffing of their advances lead them to move toward arbitration.  They made it very clear that he only owned the top 6 inches of soil, and they had rights to anything underneath.  He then, off the top of his head, threatened them that he would sue damages if they disturbed his 6 inches, for the entire property is an artwork.  Any disturbance would compromise the work, and he would sue.

Immediately after that meeting, he called a lawyer (who is also an art collector) and asked if his intuitive threat would actually hold legally.  The lawyer visited, saw the scope of the work on the property, and wrote a document protecting the artwork.

The oil companies have kept their distance ever since.

This is but one example of Peter’s ability to negotiate quickly on his feet, and to find solutions that defy expectations.

I feel like this is really important.

capitalism recognizes only one kind of value

That is incredible and brilliant. Shame that there’s no respect for nature itself, but at least he found a way around things.
