Example of Star Trek Addressing Social Issues - Mental Illness

This scene got me right in the gut when I first saw it. It was revealed earlier in the episode that Garak suffers from extreme claustrophobia, experiencing a severe attack just a few scenes before this one. I was already expecting Martok and Worf to dismiss Garak’s mental illness, especially because the Klingon Empire prides its people on physical strength. I was waiting for them to call him a coward, not “getting over it” like I’ve heard so many times in my own life about mental illness. But as seen above that’s not what happened, the exact opposite does. Its moments like this that make me love Star Trek, even for all its flaws. Sometimes I get to see past my conditioned reaction of the worst, and get to see the best in people instead.

TDLR; Star Trek may be about aliens in the future, but it connects to me on a human level - more than most modern shows do today.

This also surprised me. I so frequently skip Klingon episodes because I find Klingons just do the same thing over and over, and I expected to see more of the same stuff here. That people who value actually going to war recognize a mental battle really shocked (and then delighted) me.

jonpertwee asked: Why'd you quit Goodburger, man? What happened. What. Happened.

Having to move and getting disconnected. My internet happened, mostly.

Because I don’t get a reliable connection, my bandwidth is capped, and my signal is on a satellite delay, chats tend to malfunction or when they do work properly, they destroy my connection later because the satellite company punishes you with a kind of mocking non-service if too much happens at once during any one billing period.

It’s difficult to use Skype with this connection as well, especially because group chats tend to load the ENTIRE BACKLOG when you join them, meaning not only was I barely able to communicate, but my bandwidth was being hogged the instant I logged into it.

I also was just really unhappy with and uncomfortable with the girl who turned the entire thing into her own personal after school Jesus club, and the amount of catering to her that happened became a deterrent to finding alternative ways I could get in.

That said, I’d probably still be hanging with everyone regularly if I could, even with her there. PM bitching usually made the catering to children business easier to tolerate, and watchalongs were highlights of my week back when they happened all the time.  I miss the Goodburger crew. :C

I’m sitting here wondering what specifically Julian doesn’t like about the carpet, is it the colors? Is it because he recognizes what type of material the carpet is made of, and that the com panels explode so often that it singes the fibers and leave an awful smell he can’t stand when they are in battle? Or is it because they actually even PUT carpet on the bridge and possible his medical bay, getting blood everywhere and staining everything. In the end the only way to get it out is to replicate the damn carpet patch to replace it. (A task Garak is assigned to do, which Bashir never hears the end of from Garak when they share lunch) So it’s not just the carpet he hates, it’s the entire events that are made because of the damn carpet. Why can’t they have non-slip metal flooring like they did in the old models of space ships? Some easy cleaning and functionality is all Bashir is asking for.

Meanwhile, Chief O'Brien’s face in the second gif leads one to believe that he’s only just now realized there IS carpet.

This is genetic augmentation, my friends. Ninja Carpet Senses.

lostthehat asked: So how's Chaos Knot been fairing lately?

Ahaha, turning it around on me, I see what you’re doing.

For those who have followed me since I made any mention of it (and that might be a large section of you), CK is a story I used to play out/write/draw with a friend.  It started in about 1995, and continued uninterrupted for ten or eleven years, continued interrupted for five or six, was/is a comic that putters to life every now and then but has been going on so long that it’s difficult to reconcile the art style and writing jumping in quality every few pages, and has now not done a whole lot at all.   I still have a gallery for it on dA, and it contains characters I love deeply.

Unfortunately, the last time this story had a good chance of moving was maybe a year or two ago. It had been a few years since I’d last had story-making contact with the woman I made the story with, and the character she proposed to introduce was really offensive. (Gender and sexuality were conflated, trans people were simultaneously erased and made funny, the statement ‘like all gay boys, he loves shopping’ was made, etc etc.)   I was really shocked that she presented her queer friend with a character like this, and I tried to explain that I felt uncomfortable with it, and gave ideas for how we could use this character in a non-gross way, and she seemed to agree at the time, but she hasn’t spoken to me since.  It could be for any reason, it could be unrelated, but we had a nasty tendency to fetishize male homosexuality when we were 16 or so, and it looks like she might have kept right on doing that well after I became disgusted with myself and started making people instead of freaky stereotypes.

Meanwhile, I am unsure how to continue when my characters are so enmeshed in hers in this story.  They’re married to her characters, best friends with her characters, or they’re children/parents of her characters.  19 years it’s been what it is, and it’s hard to just say, “Well, all those people are gone now!”

Also, since it’s 19 years of stuff, a huge chunk of the themes and the aesthetics of most of the characters are no longer really my bag, you know?  So I’ve been doing some slow reclaiming of the characters - amping up their creepier or more 'alternative’ aspects, fixing the horrid personalities we gave to women and queer men, MAKING queen women at all, removing 90s haircuts, trying to make serious objective redesigns in costume and not just cling to things I remember from when I was 9.

Aside from June, who I recently realized is kind of intensely sociopathic, and has thus been interesting to doodle with Banshee, I haven’t drawn or revisited it much lately.

One thing I really want to do though is some stuff I DO have control over.  I want to send Hades and Sarah on a trip, I want to explore the adventures of Kajyan and Anya, I want to figure out what Agnes and Chaz are doing, I’d like to make June a bit more bi-flirtatious while remaining asexual.  That last thing, I can sort of just say, 'this is a thing’, but the others are things I can do because I own both characters in the pair, there’s just a weird echo in the CK world now.

openthedooritschip asked: I finally read the Deep Dish Nine AU. Like, most of it in one sitting. I'm so happy

I’m so happy that you are so happy!  I love when people read it and tell me about it or leave comments and things~   You may even be interested to know that I worked a bit on the next part today!

I’m obscenely attached to Deep Dish Nine. It is some potent stuff. Full of mostly joy, but also Concentrated High Octane Sad if you peel up the corners a little. It is my joy~

lostthehat asked: What do you like better: gummy bears or gummy worms?

Gummy worms, definitely.  They are more likely to gross people out, come in outrageous neon colors and be sour, and sour candy is my favorite type of candy ever. The more unbearably sour for normal humans, the better.

To this day, the only foods that make my mouth water - the way people are supposed to get mouthwater-y over steak and pie and other generally accepted Loony Toons tasty foods - are sour candy and vinegar.
