Star Trek fans help me out please. I’ve been thinking about watching DS9 however I really dislike the Frengi. Should I still watch it?
Definitely. While there are a few Ferengi-centric episodes, they’re easily skipped. And everything else more than makes up for their presence, believe me.
Absolutely. TNG Ferengi are pretty much nothing like DS9 Ferengi, anyway, so you may find that what you dislike is not even present or evolves away early on in DS9. I actually watched DS9 the whole way through as an adult before I revisited TNG and I was really confused, irritated, and seething with dislike for Ferengi in TNG. Meanwhile, one of my favorite DS9 episodes stars like eight of them, so it’s a totally different experience.
The episodes that focus on them aren’t many, so you could skip them, but I think you’d be surprised by the amount of development they get both as a species and individual characters (Quark, Rom and Nog all transform during the show, though the latter two more dramatically).
The show itself is wonderful, my favorite Trek by far and far and far, and definitely worth watching. I think it’d be a real shame to miss it for a few episodes worth of one species and/or a main character of said species. (I skip all the Klingon episodes!)
