I would really like to watch more creepy horror things, but I feel I am left cold by most of the genre abusing women or relying on cheap jump scares.

Does anyone have some recommendations for things that are creepy and elegant, or thoughtful, or maybe even just strange?  I want more horror things, but I don’t want more brutalized women or scares being manufactured through a startle response.  It doesn’t have to be straight up in the horror genre, but something spooky, something off, something weird.  Like Coraline, in that way.  I like Ringu a lot, too, though that’s more specifically the horror genre.  I enjoyed the fantasy sides of Pan’s Labyrinth quite a bit, too.

I don’t find clowns or dolls creepy (obviously?), so those just seem tired to me.  I don’t understand why they’re supposed to be scary, so none of those unless there’s some particular elegance or intrigue involved rather than a presumed default ‘scariness by nature.’   I want strange and weird and creepy and ideally beautiful.

I also don’t really find zombies all that interesting.  I watch one zombie show and I don’t care to find more.  And that one sent me into asexual existential depressive crisis mode at one point, so.

Which leads to the filter that’s going to ensure that nothing exists for me to watch:  No sexual content.  Would love that.  Kind of really need that, actually.

If there’s still something you can recommend, please let me know!

Horror feels like stand up comedy - you have to vet it through like four people who can promise you aren’t going to walk into something cheap, sexist, and racist, and even then you have to re-evaluate it every few years, haha.
