heads up, trans friends and friends on hormone pills & replacements! I just had a chat with a biochemist friend of mine. I complained that sometimes caffeine really seems to affect me and sometimes it doesn’t, and she asked, “Well, are you taking birth control or any estrogen medications?”

Turns out estrogen greatly interferes with how the body breaks down caffeine, and can cause adverse symptoms in people who otherwise wouldn’t have been bothered by the amount of caffeine they were ingesting prior to taking estrogens.

This may not be that much of concern for your average estrogen-recipient, but for people who suffer anxiety-related mental illness, who have high blood pressure or heart issues, mixing estrogen with caffeine could produce clinically significant symptoms/problems worth your attention.

Symptoms liiiiike???

Ordinary symptoms of caffeine overdose (because they impair your ability to metabolize caffeine), like heart palpitations, jitters, anxiety, high blood pressure, head ache, headspins/dizziness, irritability. More serious symptoms include chest pain and heart arrhythmia, confusion, vomiting and hallucinations.
