These folks are ‘The Newtons’, who, according to the caption on the back, raised my Great-Great-Grandfather.  I don’t know what circumstances led to all this, but Mrs. Newton doesn’t have a torn forehead or a slash through her chest anymore, so at least they have that going for them.
