Unpopular opinion but…love shouldn’t be unconditional, actually?

I mean. It’s okay to stop loving someone when they hurt you, it’s okay to stop loving someone if they became an asshole, it’s okay to stop loving someone if they are dangerous, it’s okay so stop loving someone when they do something unforgivable.

I get where this idea of unconditional love comes from, and I agree with it when it’s based on things people can’t control, but…actions shouldn’t benefit from this privilege. It’s a dangerous line of thought, for victims of abuse firstly, because if you’re supposed to love someone through everything then you can’t leave. It also helps abusers get away with their shit, as they claim that they do it “out of love”, because, if love is unconditional, then you can’t stop loving someone, but you can also do anything in the name of love.

As someone who’s constantly shamed for not loving my abusive parents anymore, it causes me great distress.
