When you think about it in context it’s actually kind of wild that historical artists were always painting bible scenes with the figures wearing clothes that were contemporary for the time and located in settings that looked like the painter’s local region. Like imagine if nowadays somebody painted the scene of, like, Lazarus returning from the dead, but Jesus was dressed in jeans and a flannel and the whole thing was taking place in an alley in NYC
