I don’t want to keep adding to this post but like. The reason it’s not specifically or exclusively about lesbianism is because having irrational anxiety about whether your sexuality is predatory is something shared by lots of gay, bi, and trans people, some straight cis men, and even people who just think of themselves as ugly. Simply being attracted to someone who finds you sexually unattractive isn’t a shameful violation. People have internalized not just homophobia but the whole idea that like… being undesirable makes your own desire grotesque.
I think this is a really common anxiety among people with various types of dysmorphia. There is a conviction that your body is gross or unattractive, and a fear that no one will desire you because of it… and that your ugliness renders your desire for other people horrifying, inappropriate, and scandalous. (“I think she’s beautiful, but she would be disgusted by me; therefore my attraction to her is disgusting.”)
