Tonight on The Gay Doll Agenda, Comfy Princesses are a really strong proportional body match for the 2019 She-Ra dolls. The princesses’ articulation is not as good and their feet are more highly arched, but it is a close thing. We can work with this. I don’t love this proportion set by any means, and I think I will definitely look at modifying it in the future, but I wanted to start everyone on about the same place.
My Miraculous Ladybug doll is also extremely similar in the size, proportion, and articulation, but availability is 🚫 both in terms of dolls being available-for-sale and range of skin tones. They were planning another line with improved everything this year allegedly, given images from Toy Fair, but I don’t know when that will be. And since it’s a new line with new sculpts it might not even be the same scale anymore so, whatever, right now I’m looking at princesses.
The size of their heads is absolutely mind-boggling. My very distant idea was to shrink the Princess Jasmine head, which I thought it would be a good base for Mermista, and then put that on a Moana body, for a better body type match to Mermista. Then potentially find a totally different head to put on the Jasmine body to become Perfuma? Or perhaps I could use Pocahontas because I also grabbed that set. I have a Moana coming in the mail because why not at this point, but I have a feeling she will be a lot darker than Jasmine and so I will have to review Options.
Options being things like trying to find other heads that are reasonably in the same size zone. I thought the large but not totally Bonkers Disney Store heads might be an option, although I was frankly completely startled by the size of Jasmine’s forehead. I’ve owned this doll for like two years and this is the first time I was like holy shit why is her head so long. Anyway Disney Store princesses may be something to investigate, depending on the sculpt and skin tone.
Despite modern playline Barbie being a larger head then the 80s and 90s dolls they still feel a little too small. BUT, the thrift store head directly to the right of Adora looks passable in size and scale. It is tellingly from the age of Mattel making all of the Barbie heads really ballooned but vehemently denying it, with a 2003 date. I really don’t want a big toothy smiling face for any of the princesses on my immediate radar (Entrapta, Perfuma, Mermista), but options are being investigated.
( Scorpia is on the later radar because she’s going to entail grafting scorpion claws onto what will likely amount to a modified Ken doll and there’s just going to be a lot happening there.)
Meanwhile, Catra got a mug from Horde Disneyland while I spent money doing doll evaluations and planning for science.
And the gay agenda.
