ghostrally asked:

i loooooved all of the outfits in s5!! what was the process for choosing adora’s “wish” outfit and hair?

raygeigrr answered:

All of the future/wish outfits were designed by storyboarder Mickey Quinn, who also boarded that scene! She loves designing clothes and she loves catradora so it was an easy pick for Noelle to loan that previs out to her. Here is one of the later sketches she did of them, which I then used to do the full turns:

I asked her if she had anything to say about it and she said “I dunno. Just post the drawings I did.” So that’s that.

I can extrapolate that Adora’s outfit is inspired by Classic She-ra, and Catra was dressed to match her. Similarly, Bow dressed to match Glimmer especially in color palette.
My own aspects of the designs that I added were the interlocking moon & heart shape on the backs of both Bow & Glimmer’s capes, and the small golden wing fastening Catra’s shirt closed, which is supposed to be a call to the golden wing on Adora’s belt when she joins the rebellion.

You didn’t ask but I have some Etherian lore inside my brain when I’m designing that dedicated couples/spouses have some ceremony of swapping or giving articles of clothing to make the relationship official, instead of marriage & rings. It started with me swapping Spinny/Netossa’s necklaces when I first started on She-Ra, because I wasn’t sure how textually gay we could actually get and I NEEDED people to be able to tell that they were actually factually in lesbians with each other.
After that point it kind of became a thing. IE Micah was drawn with Angella’s earrings (though they both have 2), and then Glimmer & Bow here also share the same pair on opposite ears. Catra took Adora’s golden wing from her belt, Adora takes Catra’s mask as She-Ra. Hordak wears Entrapta’s armor and her first ones chip, although I’m not sure what he gave her back. It also became my own half-joke that George and Lance, because I forgot to do it very visibly for them, simply swapped their favorite socks.

Hi! I misspoke on this one! I had a much longer post initially that I edited a few sentences out of because I know I can ramble, but I edited too much down and people are jumping to a wrong conclusion. I’ve never intended for every character who swaps items as described above to be married. I used it for things like dedicated couples or marriage. Do people say “facebook official” any more? Somebody pointed out She-Ra also takes aspects from Bow & Glimmer, so I think it can be broadened even further just to a signifier of people you love in a major way.
I don’t know what Etherian marriage customs are, and I’m not in charge of deciding that, because I am not a writer.
This design choice is also my own choice, it was not unanimously discussed and decided on, nor was it directed that I do this. I told you all because its a fun little easter egg and a look into my own process, not a secret signal that changes the intent or meaning of any of the rest of the work. And even if it WERE, gay representation deserves much more than secret signals only accessible if you read the right tumblr post from the right random designer.
So please, take this little piece of info and have fun with it, and if YOU want to imagine them as married I ABSOLUTELY support you, but I want to be clear so I do not step on any of my fellow team’s toes.
