I called that thing “I’m Still Here” because it sounds both like a lament and a victory
The day I heard Kingdom Burning Down, I was already almost done with the original version of ISH. I had heard the band because of Eurovision and listened to another few songs on last.fm or something.
I liked the intro. I liked the quiet but with something Coming feeling. I liked the words. And then “I’m still here” before the song shifts direction abruptly and I about came out of my skin. The story had been called that for years, but hearing it sung in Kingdom Burning Down made it feel like that was finally when it connected. I knew before the chorus finished I would put that song everywhere I could.
Occasionally, I think of retitling my blog something self depreciating, especially “too much and not enough,” which is the description of myself that haunts me most deeply, but when I go to do it I see that the title is Kingdom Burning Down and I remember the first time I heard “I’m still here” and it stays.
