American entertainment is geared solely towards the fantasies of mediocre white dudes.
Even “rom coms” written “for ladies” usually have this age gap. There’s often a leading man who’s a 5 with a woman who’s a 10. You see it even in television commercials. The doofy dad and his incredibly hot, thin, capable wife.
I used to get upset as a kid because it made me feel like I would be forced to marry some dude I found unattractive because so many of these men were punching about their weight in stories. It’s silly maybe, but I still have nightmares about it.
I too had a sincere and real terror that I would eventually be forced to marry a way older man who just drunk beer and told me how much he hated me all the time because of the media I was exposed to.
I told everyone I was going to become a nun because I thought those were the only people who were allowed do not get married.
