It’s a terrible, unpleasant subject but this essay by @thelilithmachine explains and contextualizes some pretty important history to be aware of. We all know the worst thing about modern anime and manga but even I didn’t know how much it traced back to one explosive fandom movement around a character most likely created with no such ill intentions at all, dozens of studios scrambling to cash in on that movement all at once, one shitty man taking advantage of it to further a petty agenda and an even shittier man you may have already heard set off a cultural panic that, unfortunately, isn’t hard to understand and still made everything turn out worse.
It’s so thoroughly researched and sheds so much light on how this industry got so fucked, so fast.
