I can’t sleep I’m gonna talk

The cool style copying exercise started because I repainted those Pinkie Pie doll shoes. I expected absolutely zero from the television show but I wanted to look at the art that was designed for the dolls in specific when I was going in to do the repaint of the shoes.

There wasn’t really anything specific because the tricky thing they do when they design Doll Art is lovingly render everything in lines and then color it all pink anyway probably so that they can’t be accused of misrepresenting. Anyway I was just looking at the art and the weird freakish where they’ve got these horse ears attached and how they were compensating for said freakish attachment by using a lot of hair.

And then several things slotted into place like it would be funny to see what a character without a shitload of hair would look like and it would be kind of appealing to try to replicate this style because it seems like one of those ones that’s Charming enough to glance at and then you sit with it and it’s a nightmare. And the next thing I know I’m drawing Johnny the homicidal maniac but as rendered in a cartoon about human ponies.

And I thought shit that was a full nightmare to look at, let me try another one but one that I don’t think is quite so necessarily garbage and that I enjoy.

And I did the Shera one and I couldn’t look at his eyes I couldn’t take his face seriously. For some reason those eyes felt even more big and sparkly and whatnot then the ponies. It did make me draw something with pretty much no line weight and not as much shading as I normally would use though.

I took from animation which doesn’t get fancy with shadows and highlights unless it really needs to blow up a moment in some way. I bent the rules here and there to add just a little shading

They’re horrifying to look st but I’m kinda weirdly proud of having made thrm
