I’m gonna end up buying some of the Barbie Extra dolls and having fun making a mix and match adventure with their clothes, to be honest.
i really don’t care if they’re trying to copy MGA, we established earlier this year that the guy in charge there is Not Great and I’m sick of giant baby headed dolls. I bought two of the blacklight ones because they hit me in the favorite eras/design elements, but I’m so sick of enormous heads. These outfits aren’t nearly as cohesive or well-researched, and certainly won’t be as well-made, but there’s enough going on there that I’ll end up getting some.
Also just, god, everything Barbie does looks exactly the same now, even more so than it did when I thought everything was just one pink frothy dress after another in 80s and 90s. So if they want to give me giant fluffy rainbow coats and some other weird shit that isn’t covered in a BMR1959 logo, I’m down.
Also fuck can they not consolidate some of the shit they’re doing? Why does filling the aisle with 100 dolls who are all painted and rooted the exact same way and dressed in the same vague potato sack seem to be their whole business model? Distribute your budget differently, holy hell.
I saw all the new images on Instagram and it was like, “Here’s the new Fairytopia dolls,” and I thought, “These look exactly the same as every single other one? You could replace these images with pictures of the ones on the shelves now and I would not know the difference.” I wasn’t even aware Fairytopia was an active line that was being added to every year until I saw the mer-Ken. I just assumed the same dolls had been on the shelves for years.
All the colors are the same, all the themes are the same.
“Here’s the budget dolls,” the one picture said, and I laughed, like, “Aren’t all Barbie dolls budget dolls at this point?” They just look like particularly limp Fashionistas, and those are like 7 dollars. Like we haven’t seen a Fashionista in an ice cream print sack before. The Fashionista will just have ugly ruffles where no one wants ruffles.
