SPOOPYWEEN 2020
I had bought this Zombie Shake Rochelle and Venus 2 pack back when it went on clearance years ago, and since then they’ve been stuck in WIP limbo. In fact, their hair had been in curlers for that many years. I’ve always loved their original designs, but I wanted to push them further.
Every Halloween I have meant to work on them, but simply didn’t (yay depression and chronic illness). But since I’m now unemployed and don’t know if we’ll even be around next year, no time like the present to get shit done!
Rochelle’s cracks are actually carved in, and I’m so unhappy by how flat they look because I used a shader that was too dark. I tried lightening the cracks but they never looked right. I know that patina is only present in oxidizing copper or bronze, but it’s just so pretty on statues and it was already present in her original color scheme so I just went with it! Maybe a bit too much, hehe.
Venus I was extremely uncertain about every step of the way because it didn’t seem that any of the things I was doing were going to mesh well in the end. I’m somewhat pleasantly surprised by her final form. Her original design has an overgrown plant theme, but I thought a diseased plant with blight would be more appropriate. Oh, and I was very happy to find out by a tumblr user that the brainy hair shaved design is actually reminiscent of a plant, so yay. I wonder if the designers knew that.
One of my biggest disappointments is the texture of their hair. Like I said, I had curled/braided their hair years ago, and during that time GLUE SEEPAGE emerged. I either had to undo all of their curls/braids and go through a hair degreasing treatment and redo the curls/braids OR risk sticking their heads, curls and all, into the degreasing solution and hope it wasn’t going to be too damaging. Well, it wasn’t too bad, but still got some pretty fried ends despite soaking in conditioner. Oh, well. It adds to the aesthetic? XD
