You should never have to justify spending time in/on fandom to anyone, because fandom is a hobby and we do hobbies for pleasure. Certainly you shouldn’t have to justify it by saying that it gives you marketable job skills.
Nevertheless, in case you need the validation today, literally everything I’ve done at work since yesterday afternoon is based on skills I learned in X-Files fandom when I was in high school.
