Statue of the Goddess Mut

A detail of a limestone sculpture depicts the mother goddess Mut, from a group statue of Amun and her consort Mut. Her name literally means mother in the ancient Egyptian language. On her head she wears three styles of wig, which are surmounted by the ‘pschent’ or Double Crown of Egypt.

The head of the goddess Mut was originally excavated by Auguste Mariette at Karnak in 1873, with further parts being found over the course of many years in subsequent excavations. New Kingdom, late 18th Dynasty, probably reign of Horemheb, ca. 1319-1292 BC. From the Karnak Cachette. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 99064
