Have you ever been reading or watching a piece of media and thinking to yourself, “From an asexual perspective, something feels… off,” but you can’t put your finger on what? I think I can help.
There is quite a bit of media out there that relies - sometimes without even knowing it - on anti-asexual (aphobic) tropes. These tropes get woven into the fabric of the stories or the characterization. In this post, I look at what I consider to be six tropes that get reproduced in media over and over again.
This is just a brief overview and each trope has its own post exploring it in more detail. But I hope this can at least be a starting point and maybe give some brief examples of terms you can use when media feels “off”. Got any other tropes you see in media that I don’t describe here? Let me know!
