Here is a great article that goes over how many times Sailor Moon’s has been mishandled and how hard it is to be an English speaking fan. Which is something I’ve spoken about time and time again as a fan of the series.

Between Toei’s chronic mishandling of the franchise, to botched modern translations of the manga, to general poor choices all around, the franchise has been constantly mishandled and mistreated in both the international and specifically the English speaking/US market as a whole.

I read some of the comments on the original article and there was a handful of poeple saying that Sailor Moon fans had it good because series like Pokemon, Shaman King, and Yu-Gi-Oh! had edited English dubs originally and haven’t been redubbed with proper translations.

That is true, there is no doubt about it, but most of those edits were to make the series available to a younger demographic and edit out/around inappropriate jokes/humor/content, a large majority of the original story is still present even in those dubs. Sailor Moon is different because the *entire* story in the first two seasons was altered in its original dub which DiC had to modify more and more as the show went on and referenced events DiC had changed with little forethought.

Not to mention that Yu-Gi-Oh! has received a proper subtitled release via Crunchyroll and a proper fansub release of Shaman King exists as well. And Shaman King’s own reboot is (so far) leaps and bounds better than the Sailor Moon reboot even if the pacing is a bit off.

Pokemon is in a bad spot because between Nintendo and TPCi I do not think the original Pokemon anime will ever see an official English release (and to my knowledge many of the original Japanese episodes have been edited for rebroadcast), but I know there were fansub groups trying to recover original Japanese episodes as they aired to subtitle them.

Also the article is highlighting how time and time again the licensors have botched Sailor Moon’s releases and expected fans to support said releases whether it be translation quality, image quality, or poor decisions by the licensors so it isn’t an apples to apples comparison. And Sailor Moon was the most popular and profitable shoujo anime and manga of the 90’s, if it were treated with the same respect as its shonen competitor/counterpart (also a Toei property) Dragonball/Dragonball Z, it would be in an entirely different place currently.
