Punjabi but in a southern accent
The accent makes me think I should understand what he’s saying is this what a stroke feels like
15 years ago i was in my friend’s wedding. said friend is vietnamese! i got really used to hearing her speaking vietnamese with a vague valley girl accent, but i was NOT prepared for her aunt, who immigrated here and lived in tennessee to bust out speaking vietnamese in a THICK deep south drawl at the rehearsal dinner. i had to bolt to the bathroom before i lost it at the table bc it was SO SURREAL. my friend followed me bc she thought i was having a panic attack and i was like I THOUGHT YOUR VALLEY GIRL VIETNAMESE WAS SURREAL SOUNDING ENOUGH, YOUR AUNT HAS JUST BLOWN MY GODDAMN MIND.
(for reference, i am schizoaffective and have psychotic episodes that sometimes make it so people around me sound like they’re speaking another language but in their normal voice, so hearing an accent i am really used to in english being wrapped around vietnamese made me feel like i was having an episode, this wasn’t a case of “ha ha, she talks funny!”)
we have some romanian friends, and their little boy has almost zero accent when speaking english, but a THICK american southern accent when speaking romanian.
presumably it’s a matter of perception. like someone from up north might hear his southern accent all the time, but we only notice it in romanian bc…well, he speaks english like everyone from round here, but you can hear how he speaks romanian differently from the rest of his family???
