Entry 17a:Garak’s smile
Coyblythe reading ‘A Stitch in Time’ (Andrew J. Robinson)

“And you have to use that wonderful smile of yours more often, Elim”
Finally… I was waiting to get to this scene for ages. This post and the next 3 will all be about an important (2 page long) conversation between Garak and Palandine, a Cardassian woman for whom he has romantic feelings and who is quite refreshingly different from the other people in Garaks life. In my opinion Garak learned two important things from Palandine that later become an important part of his character:
1. Palandine teaches him the importance of smiling and approaching people in a non-threatening way. I think its mainly because of her that we later on DS9 get introduced to a Garak who’s constantly smiling in every situation. I just love how Robinson gives that characteristic its backstory in the book.
2. Palandine influences his viewpoint on “Lies” and “Truth”. In DS9 we see that character that has a very relativistic view on the issue (and I’m very inclined to agree) who tells Bashir that “Especially the lies” he told him are true. Entry 17b will feature a quote from this scene that makes it quite clear where this view originated from.
So yeah, I hope you’ll enjoy the quotes from that scene as much as I did :)
(p.s. the quote on the pic above is actually from a scene some pages later but it perfectly fits with the small one on top of the entry which really is part of the scene with Palandine so I thought I combine them)
