I was tagged by @capncrystal to list ten songs I’m listening to ~now-ish~   As it turns out, I’ve been working on resurrecting my iPod, so I’m mostly just listening to a stream of iConsciousness, but the songs that I’ve been focusing heavily on and getting into playlists and playing over and over are:

  • Alice Merton - No Roots  -  ‘i’ve got no roots, but my home was never on the ground’   |   My brother recommended this to me the day after I heard it on the radio.

  • ONUKA - Vidlik  -  “Countdown”.  Ukrainian sound that went so fucking hard at Eurovision last year as the interval act that I’m still obsessed. Folk instruments, techno something or other, video full of surreal and avant garde aesthetic that looks like it wants to murder you.  Love it.

  • Mary Lambert - Secrets - ‘they tell us from the time we’re young/to hide the things that we don’t like about ourselves/ inside ourselves’  (noteable also: ‘i’m so gay, sometimes I cry a whole day’) | Tinsnip showed me this one!  Every line is just like, ‘same’.

  • Selena Gomez and Marshmallow - Wolves  “ I wanna feel the way that we did that summer night (night)/Drunk on a feeling, alone with the stars in the sky/I’ve been running through the jungle/I’ve been running with the wolves/To get to you, to get to you “  |  I heard this on the radio at work and I just find myself very fond of it.  Occasionally, it hits things.

  • Evanescence - Breathe No More -  ‘i know the difference between myself and my reflection/I just can’t help but to wonder - which of us do you love?’
  • and Evanescence -  Missing -  “ You won’t cry for my absence, I know/You forgot me long ago./Am I that unimportant?/Am I so insignificant?/Isn’t something missing?/Isn’t someone missing me?”   |  I listened to both of these songs a lot in highschool, and it strikes me now as an adult how strongly I associated them with my dad when they were most likely written for a shitty abusive boyfriend.  Since getting the new Evanescence album, I have been listening to and revisiting a lot of these songs that were an outlet for me to deal with abusive family before I was even really sure it was abuse.   It’s the same with ‘Everybody’s Fool’, which I always thought of as about my step-mother.  (thanks, angry dad garbage 👍)
  • Dihaj - Skeletons -  “Have my skeletons/(I can only trick you once, bad boy)/Have my lungs, my millions/(Talk is cheap don’t speak in tongues, bad boy)/Drum drum drum, bring out the guns/(Drum drum drum, bring out the guns, bad boy)/I’m so so cursed”  | My favorite from Eurovision 2017.  I love the sound, I love the visuals, I concede that not all the words make sense and I Do Not Care.   I love the feeling of this one.

  • Ghost Town - You’re So Creepy -   “ Creepy girls/You’re just my style/Blood-red lipstick/You don’t smile”   | I love the cheesy horror movie sounds in this.  I like creepy girls.  I wish to be creepy girls.  I like tune.  Here we are.

  • Bonnie McKee - Bombastic “you know i’m bringing bombastic / i’m feeling fucking fantastic!/ turn up the music, yeah, blast/ you know i’m playing like ‘no more mr. nice guy, i’m coming for ya” | Honestly, anyone rhyming ‘bombastic’ with ‘fucking fantastic’ is great in my book.

Other good recent obsessions are:

  • the entire Evanescence ‘Synthesis’ album, but in particular Imaginary, which was a favorite from highschool, has some incredible new instrumentation.  I played it on repeat for an entire week to and from work and got excited at the big brass part Every Single Time.

A few years ago, I worked at a Macy’s, and in the mornings, when I was folding 700 pairs of jeans in the juniors’ section during December (and November, and part of October…), I’d hear this heartfelt, sweet, and almost elegant version of Jingle Bells of all things. It didn’t really sound like Jingle Bells, but the lyrics were definitely there. I used to just stand there in a little trance swaying and folding and making sure I could hear the whole thing.  The music in that store was soul-crushing during holidays, so this was the most welcome sound in the world during that season.

My coworkers had smart phones and were used to me falling in love with music they’d long ago tuned out and tried to Shazam the song for me, but they couldn’t get close enough to the speakers to get a read on the song.   Google was no help, because it was fucking Jingle Bells

It took me two years to find this version! I finally found it last year, and I still just think it’s amazingly sweet. That these ladies took something as vapid and primary color sounding as Jingle Bells and made it into this just makes me happy.  They’re called Shedaisy, and are usually country, apparently, which is not my thing at all and is probably why I’d never heard the song until Macy’s.

I sort of avoid Christmas anything overall, and I’m not a country person unless it’s women singing casually about committing felonies, but this just charms me and I thought some of you might like this as well. :)

This is ‘Dinle’ by Şebnem Paker, the Turkish entry from Eurovision 1997, and it’s just one of my favorite songs. I’ve been listening to it a lot this week for some reason.  It’s got this elegant movement from slow to fast, her voice is really unique, and I love these instruments.

It’s so satisfying to sing along to. There are a few really strong notes that just feel good to belt out.

Though, I do like the lyrics of the original one better!

(Amy, I don’t know if you look at this blog anymore, but you will probably like this! You were asking me for more international music once!

Kaleigh and Meg, I think you ladies may enjoy this as well.

Tinsnip, if I haven’t sent this to you already, I probably will in the future, so you might as well check it out now.)

OOC: FOREVER REBLOG.

:O ITS THIS ONE!!!!!

(via muiromem)

So it’s time for music or something (which reminds me that I need to go track down the embarrassing fandom sleepover stuff and get on that biz).   I like lots and lots of music from all around the world, so I just dump it on you guys.

This is a Taiwanese girl group called S.H.E, introduced to me in 2004/2005 when my roommate in college was a Chinese language major.  We rocked out to this song, Superstar, all the time and I am extremely gay for the angry one with the short hair (aren’t I always, though) who eventually throws her jacket into the audience.

Lately, for reasons I’m not sure of, this has been on repeat in my room, and thus an outrageous amount of Deep Dish Nine has been made to this song.

But this is the first time I’ve seen a full English translation, and even though it’s not a very elegant translation, I’m seeing enough to get the meaning of the song and I’m so disappointed that the lyrics are so obsessive.

It’s furiously catchy, though.  Mica, you and I were all about the non-ironic enjoyment of some dumb shit during our sleepover, so you may like this.  Kaleigh, you may be on board as well.

Oh shit why am I associating “I Dreamed a Dream” with Garak now? WTF NO BRAIN STOP IT

I dreamed a dream in time gone byyyyyy / When hope was high and life worth liviiiiiiing

I had a dream my life would be / so different from this hell I’m living

we should all have a ‘songs I somewhat shamefully associate with fandom’ slumber party

and by slumber, i mean tumblr

yes lets! I have so many.

Okay, here’s one I discovered on a car ride home.  It was an old CD of mine and then there were gears turning a I spaced out at 60 miles an hour and then wondered where I was ten minutes later. I may or may not have started a drawing based off of this one. Um.  Not in the car, though.

Lady loves music from all over the globe, so these require translations like 80% of the time, but!

Nu Pagadi - Sweetest Poison (disclaimer: I’ve never seen this video, I just have the song. I have no idea what’s in the video)

(You’re my sweetest poison)

Ich bin kein Dämon,                  I’m not a demon,
doch etwas Böses ist das schon   But something evil is already
In meinem Kopf in meinem Blut     in my head, in my blood
genau darum bin ich so gut         that’s exactly why i’m so good

Ich bin das Wasser in der Wüste             I am the water in the desert
Reptil im Paradies                                 reptile in paradise
Niemand dem ich ein Lächeln schenke,   (something about not giving anyone a
der sich nicht küssen ließ                      smile, and not allowing kisses? Trouble
with this part, sorry. :[ )

Die Augen sind geschlossen            eyes are closed
Ich ziele nach Gefühl                     I aim toward feeling
Bewege mich in Kreisen                  I move in circles
und komm trotzdem an mein Ziel      and still reach my goal

Ich bin Nitroglycerin                      I’m nitroglycerin
lösche Feuer mit Benzin                 extinguish fire with gasoline
Wer mich in seinen Venen fühlt       Who(ever) feels me in his veins
wird mir nicht mehr entfliehen         will never escape me.

Chorus:
See the falling angels pray
(for my sweetest poison)
I can take this tears away
(you’re my sweetest poison)
And I crash and I burn
and I freeze in hell
(for your poison)
Yeah I`m living my life
in the dark of your spell
(you´re my sweetest poison)

Wer hat dir gesagt,                           Who told you
dass ich im Herzen schuldlos bin?         that I’m, in my heart, innocent?

Die Sünde liegt im Schlaf                    The sin lies in sleep
mit ihr erwacht das Höllenkind              you awaken with the hellchild

vom himmel abgestürzt                        from heaven crashed
erleuchtet in der Dunkelheit                  illuminated in the darkness
die Macht der Liebe                             the power of love
hält für dich das süße Gift bereit            keeps the sweet poison ready for you

feel me rushing through your veins
(feel me rushing through your veins)
can you feel the precious pain

Kannst du die Engel fallen sehn?                 Can you see the angels fall?
(for my sweetest poison)
Bis sie in Tränen vor dir stehen                   until they stand before you in tears
(you’re my sweetest poison)

this is because I’m a scary person, I think.   This was mostly done with Google translate and then me fixing some things or outright wondering what crack Google was on.  I took German, but it was a while ago and I have not had an excuse to use it in such a long time that it is super, super shaky.  So this is probably not even close to perfect, but it gives an idea, and it holds together with the stuff being said in English, so I’m going to roll with it.
BUT, that aside, I am on some kind of violence crack, because man if I don’t enjoy some sort of darker, scarier, slightly more obsessive Garak and Bashir than I generally draw (in addition to that stuff!), and this kind fueled it when I stopped idly singing along and listened to what I was singing.  I love things fucked up as much as I love with pink sugar frosting, I don’t know how to deal with myself sometimes.
But yeah, pick what you like with this, I guess.  I had thought a lot about someone saying Cardassians used to be a little poisonous, I thought a bit about something that I might do later in Awkward Adventures, I liked the super cliche dark and light imagery and I had to smile about the reptile thing…
SO THERE WE GO.
sorry about the formatting, i didn’t know how else to do this
i will choose one in english next time

This is the oldest piece of music known to humankind. It’s engraved in cuneiform on a tablet from 1400 BC. And it was a hymn to their goddess Nikkal.

I wasn’t actually expecting something serious.

I thought Toxic was going to start playing

Well that was a change

I’d be interested in seeing a source for this.
