I was tagged by @capncrystal to list ten songs I’m listening to ~now-ish~ As it turns out, I’ve been working on resurrecting my iPod, so I’m mostly just listening to a stream of iConsciousness, but the songs that I’ve been focusing heavily on and getting into playlists and playing over and over are:
- Alice Merton - No Roots - ‘i’ve got no roots, but my home was never on the ground’ |
My brother recommended this to me the day after I heard it on the radio.
- ONUKA - Vidlik - “Countdown”. Ukrainian sound that went so fucking hard at Eurovision last year as the interval act that I’m still obsessed. Folk instruments, techno something or other, video full of surreal and avant garde aesthetic that looks like it wants to murder you. Love it.
- Mary Lambert - Secrets - ‘they tell us from the time we’re young/to hide the things that we don’t like about ourselves/ inside ourselves’ (noteable also: ‘i’m so gay, sometimes I cry a whole day’) | Tinsnip showed me this one! Every line is just like, ‘same’.
- Selena Gomez and Marshmallow - Wolves - “
I wanna feel the way that we did that summer night (night)/Drunk on a feeling, alone with the stars in the sky/I’ve been running through the jungle/I’ve been running with the wolves/To get to you, to get to you
“ | I heard this on the radio at work and I just find myself very fond of it. Occasionally, it hits things.
- Evanescence - Breathe No More - ‘i know the difference between myself and my reflection/I just can’t help but to wonder - which of us do you love?’
- and Evanescence - Missing - “ You won’t cry for my absence, I know/You forgot me long ago./Am I that unimportant?/Am I so insignificant?/Isn’t something missing?/Isn’t someone missing me?” | I listened to both of these songs a lot in highschool, and it strikes me now as an adult how strongly I associated them with my dad when they were most likely written for a shitty abusive boyfriend. Since getting the new Evanescence album, I have been listening to and revisiting a lot of these songs that were an outlet for me to deal with abusive family before I was even really sure it was abuse. It’s the same with ‘Everybody’s Fool’, which I always thought of as about my step-mother. (thanks, angry dad garbage 👍)
- Dihaj - Skeletons - “Have my skeletons/(I can only trick you once, bad boy)/Have my lungs, my millions/(Talk is cheap don’t speak in tongues, bad boy)/Drum drum drum, bring out the guns/(Drum drum drum, bring out the guns, bad boy)/I’m so so cursed” | My favorite from Eurovision 2017. I love the sound, I love the visuals, I concede that not all the words make sense and I Do Not Care. I love the feeling of this one.
- Ghost Town - You’re So Creepy -
“
Creepy girls/You’re just my style/Blood-red lipstick/You don’t smile” | I love the cheesy horror movie sounds in this. I like creepy girls. I wish to be creepy girls. I like tune. Here we are.
- Bonnie McKee - Bombastic - “you know i’m bringing bombastic / i’m feeling fucking fantastic!/ turn up the music, yeah, blast/ you know i’m playing like ‘no more mr. nice guy, i’m coming for ya” | Honestly, anyone rhyming ‘bombastic’ with ‘fucking fantastic’ is great in my book.
Other good recent obsessions are:
- the entire Evanescence ‘Synthesis’ album, but in particular Imaginary, which was a favorite from highschool, has some incredible new instrumentation. I played it on repeat for an entire week to and from work and got excited at the big brass part Every Single Time.
- the Magic Knight Rayearth first season opening theme, because I’ve been working on those dolls, it just seeps into me like some kind of contagion from the 90s and I love it, I have like five versions
- Peter Schilling’s ‘The Different Story (World of Lust and Crime) is delightfully 80s-tastic, and we all know how much I love Peter Schilling. I bought the album recently, so it’s been popping up on my phone a lot.
